John McClean
John McClean, owner and founder of The Sugar Room, began his career twenty years ago after leaving school aged sixteen and enrolling in the Belfast College of Business Studies.

As a qualified chef, he then specialised in pastry were he found his talent for cake design. During this time, he had the opportunity to further his training on board the QEII, where he worked alongside the Roux Brothers. However, after training under Michelin Pastry Chefs, he decided to change his career-path and pursue Hotel and Restaurant Management, all-the-while continuing his passion for cake design catering for private clientèle. Over the past fourteen years, John has worked for the Michelin Chef Michael Deane in various roles within the Deanes group.

In February 2009, after some sessions with a life coach, John re-realised his passion for cake design and The Sugar Room was born. Currently, The Sugar Room is a home-based business and produces spectacular confections seven days a week, some of which can be purchased in Deane's Deli, Bedford Street, Belfast.
